Verify a barcode number

Check the check digit of an EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, ITF-14 or MSI number. This checks arithmetic, not GS1 assignment or product authenticity.

Do I need a GS1 number to use these barcodes?

A correct check digit does not prove that a GTIN is assigned, registered or authentic. Retail products need an appropriately assigned GS1 GTIN; GS1 US offers both company prefixes and single-GTIN licenses. Availability depends on the local GS1 organization. Code 128 or Code 39 labels for internal use do not themselves require a GS1 GTIN.

Barcode Generator FAQ

What barcode format should I choose?

Code 128 is a flexible default for many internal labels, while EAN-13 and UPC-A are commonly used for retail product codes.

Can I print barcodes created here?

Yes. Preview the barcode at the size you need, then export PNG or SVG for your print workflow.

What text lengths are supported?

It depends on the selected format. Retail formats like EAN-13 and UPC-A require fixed lengths, while formats such as Code 128 are more flexible.

Should I show the text below the barcode?

Human-readable text is useful on many labels because it lets people verify the encoded value when a scanner is not available.

Does the barcode generator send my data to a server?

No. Generation runs entirely in your browser, so the text you type never leaves your device. Nothing is stored or logged, and you can keep generating barcodes even after losing your internet connection.

What is the difference between PNG and SVG export?

PNG is a raster image with fixed pixel dimensions, best for websites and documents. SVG is vector-based and scales to any size without blurring, which makes it the better choice for packaging, labels, and professional print work.

Why is my barcode not scanning?

Common causes are printing too small (keep UPC-A and EAN-13 at least 1.2 inches wide), cropping the quiet zone margins, low contrast, or characters the format cannot encode. Export as SVG or high-resolution PNG and leave the surrounding margins intact.

EAN-13/EAN-8/UPC-A/ITF-14 accept a data-only length (the check digit is added) or a full code whose check digit is verified. Leading zeros are data and are preserved. Code 128 encodes characters; it does not assign a GTIN. Creating a barcode image does not register, allocate or establish ownership of a GS1 identifier. A successful image read-back checks encoded content, not GS1 registration or print certification.
