Frequently Asked Questions
What is a cron expression?
The five-field schedule format used by Linux and Unix cron: minute, hour, day of month, month and day of week.
Do I need to memorise the syntax?
No. Pick values on the visual interface, start from a preset and read the human-readable description to verify.
Does it explain what a schedule means?
Yes. Every expression you build gets a plain-language description, which helps review schedules before they go live.
Does it work for systemd timers or Windows?
The output targets standard crontab on Linux and Unix. Other schedulers use different formats and need conversion.
How do I run a cron job every 5 minutes?
Select the Every 5 Minutes preset or type */5 into the minute field. The generator produces */5 * * * *, which triggers your task at minutes 0, 5, 10, 15, and so on, every hour of every day.
Can I copy the generated expression into my crontab file?
Yes. Click the copy button and paste the five space-separated fields into your crontab file using crontab -e. The output works with standard Linux and Unix cron implementations, including Vixie cron, busybox cron, and most hosting control panels such as cPanel.
What are the allowed ranges for each cron field?
Standard cron uses five fields: minute 0-59, hour 0-23, day of month 1-31, month 1-12, and day of week 0-7, where both 0 and 7 represent Sunday. The tool validates every entry against these limits while you build the expression.
Why is my cron job not running at the scheduled time?
Common causes are a stopped cron daemon, a wrong server timezone (for example, a server set to UTC instead of IST), relative file paths, or missing execute permissions. Verify the expression with the human-readable preview, run crontab -l to confirm it is installed, and always use absolute paths in your command.
